Helen Thornley

Helen is a technical officer with the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) where her role includes looking at the latest changes in tax policy and working with HMRC on developments and improvements to their systems and processes.

Helen’s background is in personal tax, and prior to joining the ATT she worked in the north of England advising family businesses and high net worth individuals. Helen writes for publications including Tax Adviser, AccountingWEB, Accountancy Age and Taxation magazine.

She has appeared on BBC Radio 4's Money Box Live and BBC Radio 5 Live's Wake up to Money in addition to many local radio stations and been quoted in the Financial Times, Times, Telegraph and Guardian. Helen is also a member of the CIOT, ICAEW and STEP (Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners).

Lindsay Webber

As a head of Strategic Solutions at OmniPro, Lindsay’s focus is on helping practices achieve on-going best practice compliance, providing in-house training and technical assistance in audit and financial reporting.

Lindsay is a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants and Chartered Accountants Ireland. She trained with KPMG in Johannesburg and specialised in external audit of financial services companies. She then spent six years lecturing audit and financial reporting to under-grad and post-grad students at Rhodes University in South Africa before moving to Ireland and returning to practice in a small, and then a medium sized firm where she was an audit manager. She is passionate about combining her academic and practice backgrounds to provide technical information in a useful and practical way.

Outside of her accounting qualifications Lindsay holds a PGDiploma in Higher Education from Rhodes University, an MBA from Trinity College Dublin and a Diploma in Forensic Accounting from Chartered Accountants Ireland.

Sarah Scala

Sarah, a Chartered Tax Adviser and tax dispute specialist, is Partner at NHD Tax Solutions and the founder and Chair of The Contentious Tax Group. Sarah supports taxpayers from all walks of life with any form of HMRC dispute. Sarah has experience of a wide variety of HMRC challenges both criminal and civil and has supported taxpayers at Tribunal and has provided expert evidence for the Courts. Sarah regularly speaks on and writes about issues affecting taxpayer mental health. This has included meeting with senior figures in HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Services and attending the Houses of Parliament to bring to the attention of MPs the way in which HMRC are handling enquiries and the length of time those enquiries and investigations are taking

Natalie Binstead-Wey

Natalie is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Adviser. She has 8 years’ experience working in the corporate tax teams of several Big 4 and Top 10 accountancy practices in Bristol. Natalie now owns her own digital accountancy practice based in Bristol, with a variety of small business and personal tax clients. Natalie has also previously been a Lecturer in Accounting and Finance for UWE Bristol and is a Past President of ICAEW West of England.

Jason Croke

Jason has over 20 years’ experience working exclusively in indirect taxes (VAT, import duty, SDLT) with owner-managed businesses, corporates and not for profit sectors. He particularly enjoys challenging HMRC decisions, representing clients in tribunals or during inspections.

His experience includes land and property, partial exemption and European VAT matters but equally happy with a VAT registration request too. Jason also advises on other indirect taxes such import duty and Stamp Duty Land Tax.

VAT and duty is a complicated subject, his main strength is being able to explain complex law in an easy-to-understand manner, enabling clients to understand what the problem is and crucially, what the solution is too.

It has often been said that he actually makes the subject of VAT sound interesting, but we will let you be the judge of that!

In his spare time, Jason likes cycling, regular (but not obsessive) trips to the gym, skiing in winter and hiking in the summer and is married with one teenage daughter.

Simon has 20 years' experience working with innovative companies and their advisers on R&D tax relief claims and the other tax incentives that support business growth.

As a tax-qualified lawyer, Simon handles R&D tax enquiries from a wide range of sources and has much more experience than most advisers in this space.

Barry Jefferd

Barry Jefferd is the Taxation Partner at George Hay Chartered Accountants. He is a Chartered Accountant, Chartered Tax Adviser and member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.

He advises on the complete range of taxes, with a particular interest in Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, and property and land transactions. Barry lectures widely on taxation on behalf of Taxation Institutes who are providing training for other professionals and is the co-author of two publications; Tax planning, a joint publication between the UK200 Group and the Daily Telegraph, and the Innovation Handbook, endorsed by the Intellectual Property Office.

He is an expert in Share and Business Valuations and has appeared in both the High and County Courts as an expert witness. Barry was also one of the first accountants in the country to pass the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales’ probate qualification. He is now director of GH Probate Ltd, our company providing probate services, and also a director of GH Wills Ltd, our company providing Will writing services.

As well as his services to clients, Barry offers a tax consultancy service for smaller practices throughout the UK, as well as advising on one off tax problems for other accountants and taxpayers.

He is currently Vice President of the Association of Tax Technicians (ATT), the country’s leading professional body dealing with tax compliance.

David Impey

David Impey is a company law solicitor, professional services marketer, writer, and lecturer. His specialities include company law, professional services marketing, strategic planning and implementation, and interactive e-marketing.

As well as specialising in company law, David also works with law firms and other law businesses, helping them with strategy, and marketing, and majoring particularly on overcoming barriers to implementation of strategic and marketing plans and tactics

From 2008 to 2014, he led and worked on a major project for the UK Intellectual Property Office, through Atom Content Marketing (formerly BHP), building and developing an online IP HealthCheck resource that helps small and medium-sized businesses to identify, protect and commercially exploit their intellectual property.

He also worked in-house for 14 fun and profitable years for leading services provider Jordans, becoming Marketing Director responsible for developing, managing and marketing its service and product range. Particularly, he led significant projects to commoditise UK and overseas ‘factory’ professional services and promote them into the UK and other legal markets.

Having successfully sold the business, Lucy worked for one of the supervisory bodies supporting members to meet their legislative obligations and satisfy professional standards.
