The purpose of this session is to educate on the main types of interaction professional advisers might expect from HMRC and to share best practice on how to represent a taxpayer in those scenarios.

 

In this session Sarah Scala will cover the following topics:

  • When might an adviser need to interact with HMRC and what form will that communication likely take
  • Setting yourself up for success by having the right conversations with the taxpayer and all of the necessary information available to you. If information is missing, what are your options?
  • Meeting HMRC: when might this occur, should your client attend, how to best prepare to ensure a successful outcome.
  • Ten suggested ways to speed up a HMRC enquiry towards resolution.
  • What to do when HMRC are not adhering to their own processes and guidance and how to handle such a situation without jeopardising the desired outcome for the client.

Sarah Scala

Sarah, a Chartered Tax Adviser and tax dispute specialist, is Partner at NHD Tax Solutions and the founder and Chair of The Contentious Tax Group. Sarah supports taxpayers from all walks of life with any form of HMRC dispute. Sarah has experience of a wide variety of HMRC challenges both criminal and civil and has supported taxpayers at Tribunal and has provided expert evidence for the Courts. Sarah regularly speaks on and writes about issues affecting taxpayer mental health. This has included meeting with senior figures in HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Services and attending the Houses of Parliament to bring to the attention of MPs the way in which HMRC are handling enquiries and the length of time those enquiries and investigations are taking
