The Spring Taxation Essentials 2025
8th of April - Day 1
10th of April - Day 2
10:00am
Corporation Tax Issues for Owner Managed Businesses
Speaker: Ros Martin - Tax Consultant & Lecturer
This session is going to give a refresher on some key corporation tax issues for smaller, owner managed businesses. Many practitioners will have a number of clients which fall within this category, and it is easy to overlook issues relating to these when there are so many changes to be considered. All of the areas to be covered are ones where there are regular questions raised, and the intention of the course is to give some practical guidance on the particular problems encountered in practice. This will help attendees identify clients which might be affected by any of these issues.
Ros Martin will cover the following topics during this session:
• Associated companies
• A review of where we are with research and development tax reliefs
• Profit extraction for owners
• Loans to participators
• Capital allowances
By attending this session, you will understand the common areas which HMRC look at in relation to OMBs and how you can advise clients to avoid the pitfalls associated with these areas.
The session will be of interest to tax advisers and business owners.
Course Level: Intermediate / Need to Know
12:10pm
Inheritance Tax Planning for Business Owners
Speaker: Carl Bayley – Author & Presenter
Before the October 2024 Budget, all you had to do to protect a business from Inheritance Tax was make sure it was a qualifying business (or agricultural property) at the relevant time. Combining that with the CGT uplift on death meant most businesses could be passed on to the next generation free of tax. But all that has changed with a new £1m cap on full business and agricultural property relief coming into force in April 2026. So, now’s the time to get planning.
In this session Carl Bayley will cover the following topics:
• The £1m business and agricultural property relief allowance: how it will operate
• Interaction with the nil rate band, the spouse exemption, and other key reliefs
• Planning for married couples: why this allowance is different and what can be done to maximise the relief available
• Lifetime transfers: what are the benefits, what are the costs
• Using trusts to increase business or agricultural property relief
• All types of business structure will be covered (sole traders, partnerships, and companies), including farms
By attending this session, delegates will be able to advise business owners (including farmers) on the issues to consider when looking to pass the business on to the next generation and some of the planning opportunities available.
The session will be of benefit to general practitioners, tax advisers, and business owners.
