Carl Bayley is the author of a series of ‘Plain English’ tax guides designed specifically for the layperson and the non-specialist (available from www.taxcafe.co.uk). His particular speciality is his ability to take the weird, complex world of taxation and set it out in the kind of clear, straightforward language taxpayers themselves can understand. Carl takes the same approach when speaking on taxation, a role he frequently undertakes with great enthusiasm, including his highly acclaimed annual ‘Budget Breakfast’. He has spoken on taxation on radio and television, including the BBC’s ‘It’s Your Money’ programme and BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine Show.

Carl is a past chairman of the Tax Faculty of the ICAEW and former member of the institute’s governing Council and Board. Aside from his tax books, Carl is an avid creative writer and is looking forward to the publication of his first novel, Trinity of Souls, in January 2024. When he isn’t working, he takes on the equally taxing challenges of hill walking and horse riding: his Munro tally is now 106 and, while he remains a novice rider, his progress is cantering along nicely.

Carl lives in the Scottish Borders, where he enjoys spending time with his partner Linda. He has three children, and his first grandchild arrived in April 2021

In 2018, Nick achieved the career milestone of having worked for 40 years in the tax sector. Having held senior positions in national firms and with a long record of success he has extensive experience across the whole range of HMRC enquiries. As a highly experienced adviser and litigator, Nick provides expert and successful representation in tax disputes of any kind.

Victoria is a Tax Director at Saffery. She is a private client tax specialist who advises HNW and UHNW individuals as well as their trustees and family offices. Having been called to the Bar in England and Wales in 2017, she worked as UK Tax Counsel for an international trust company and then a law firm, before joining Saffery and is able to draw upon these experiences when advising her clients. She studied her MSc in Taxation at the University of Oxford and is a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser. She is currently working towards her PhD in Tax Law at the University of Edinburgh.

Ros Martin CTA is a consultant and lecturer covering all aspects of direct tax and Stamp Duty Land Tax. She was an Inland Revenue fully trained Inspector until 2000 when she left to become a consultant advising on tax planning for large and small businesses and individuals as well as dealing with full and aspect enquiry work.

Her clients are mainly small and medium sized accountants and the consultancy work gives a particular opportunity to understand the key issues of concerns for such professionals and consider the practical aspects of the application of legislation.
