Data Protection & Cyber Security
with Richard Jackson
The phrases “Data Protection” and “Cyber Security” can immediately strike fear into accountants and accountancy staff, yet the reality is that both represent very “human” subjects that (when combined) can create a hugely powerful defence strategy for your firm.
In 2018, when the GDPR was on all our minds – very few of us were talking about cyber security. Fast forward 4 years and cyber security has been identified as THE key to the future of accountancy firms, as some found to their cost in January of this year.In this webinar, we explore a plain-English view of both subjects, discover why they are very different – yet intrinsically linked – and why together they become stronger than the sum of their parts. In turn, protecting your firm, your clients, your stakeholders, your employees – and your reputation.
Did you know that accountancy firms (of all sizes) are in the top 3 sectors at risk for a cyber security attack? In a recent webinar, Richard Jackson stated that data protection and cyber security are often viewed as two totally different concepts, however, they are actually linked.
‘Data protection’ is defined as an objective, it is about ensuring people can trust you to use their data fairly and responsibly. While ‘cyber security’ is more of a behaviour and it is how individuals and organisations reduce the risk of cyber-attack. By leaving yourself or your firm at risk of a cyber-attack, you could be putting both your own and your clients private records at risk.
Over the past 12 months, both the number and the frequency of cyber security attacks to accounting professionals have massively increased. Due to the fact accountants deal with finances and sensitive client data they are seen as being a more fruitful target.
