Following on from a comprehensive benchmarking study performed in 2021, where Grant Thornton benchmarked the most common, highest rated risks from a sample of charity risk registers, Paul Rao explores the diverse, complex nature of risks facing charities in 2022 and beyond.


In this session Paul covers the 10 most common, highest rated risks identified from the study and through Grant Thornton’s significant experience of working with large and high-profile charities will each be discussed in turn.

Paul Rao

Paul has over eighteen years of experience within governance, risk and internal audit, working predominantly with charities and wider not for profit clients including membership organisations, regulators and others.

He is the firm’s UK Head of Not for Profit and a member of the Global Not for Profit Leadership Team, representing the UK Not for Profit practice.

Paul is dual qualified as both a chartered accountant (ACA) and chartered internal auditor (CMIIA). He is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors' Guidance Working Group, who work closely with the technical team at the Institute. The Group writes guidance to support those in the profession of internal auditing.

Paul is also an IIA committee chair and a member of CIPFA’s internal audit board. He regularly hosts not for profit roundtables and conferences, speak at industry events and write material for the charity sector.
