Customs is a complex tax area that importers and exporters in the UK are now having to navigate when trading goods with the EU. 

In this session former HMRC customs officer Martin Agnew discusses some of the fundamentals of customs and what recent changes mean for companies importing or exporting. 

Martin will touch on ways you can understand you or your clients customs obligations, how to avoid problems at the border and crucially ways to reduce customs duties and related costs.

Martin Agnew

Martin is a Director of Across Borders Consulting with over 15 years’ experience in customs and global trade in Ireland, the UK and internationally with time spent working in customs/tax authorities, boutique consultancy and big 4 professional services firms. Martin worked for over 6 years as a customs and trade specialist in HMRC and was involved in audits, advise, authorisations and approvals and in significant initiatives in HMRC such as AEO.

Following this Martin worked in a boutique consultancy and then joined global accounting firm EY. In EY Martin advised all scales of company including major multinational clients in sectors as diverse as pharmaceutical, retail, automotive, aviation, manufacturing and heavy industry. Martin has led local, regional and global rollouts of trade compliance programs focusing on supply chain optimisation and cost reduction.

Martin then worked in PwC as a customs and trade Director on a number of national and multinational clients as a senior resource and leader in the team. Martin was heavily involved in Brexit assessments and projects with clients and government.
